Porsche 959 Komfort 1988

FOR SALE

The regular production version of the 1986 Porsche 959 is called the 959 Komfort. Porsche also offered a lighter “Sport” variant, but most cars built were Komfort models, intended to combine extreme performance with everyday usability, along with a high level of comfort and advanced engineering.

Porsche 959 Komfort – Key Specifications

  • Engine: 2.85-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six
  • Power: 444 hp (450 PS) at 6,500 rpm
  • Torque: 369 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm
  • Top speed: 197 mph (317 km/h)
  • 0–60 mph: 3.6–3.7 seconds
  • Drivetrain: Porsche PSK all-wheel-drive system
  • Weight: approximately 3,197 lbs (1,450 kg)

At the time, the 959 Komfort stood out as one of the most sophisticated road cars ever built, introducing technology that would only become widespread many years later.

Komfort Features

Compared to the stripped-back Sport version, the Komfort model came fully equipped:

  • Electronically managed suspension that adjusted ride height and damping automatically depending on driving conditions
  • A well-appointed cabin with leather trim, air conditioning, central locking, and electric windows
  • Early use of safety systems such as anti-lock brakes (ABS) and tyre pressure monitoring
  • Lightweight construction using a blend of aluminium, Kevlar composites, and polyurethane panels

Production Background

Although commonly labelled as a 1986 model, most 959 Komfort cars were actually delivered between 1987 and 1988. Vehicles from 1986 were largely pre-production units used for development, testing, and media purposes. As a result, cars officially dated to 1986 are especially scarce and often valued higher due to their early build status.

Current Market Value

Today, a 959 Komfort typically sells for between $1.8 million and $2.5 million. Exceptionally well-preserved examples with very low mileage can reach close to $3 million at major auctions.

Recent auction data shows that values for the Porsche 959 Komfort are rising steadily, with most clean examples now consistently clearing the $2 million mark.

While original 1986-titled cars are extremely rare at auction, the market for 1987 and 1988 Komfort models—which are mechanically identical—provides the most accurate look at current values.

Market Trends & Shifts

  • The “Canepa” Premium: Cars serviced or “reimagined” by 959 specialist Bruce Canepa now command a massive premium, often pushing the price well over $2.5 million due to improved reliability and performance.
  • Rapid Appreciation: The average price of a 959 has climbed from roughly $1.1 million in 2020 to nearly $2 million in 2026.
  • Analog Supercar Boom: Along with the Ferrari F40 and Carrera GT, the 959 is part of an “Analog Renaissance” where collectors are paying record prices for high-tech but driver-focused icons.
