Bugatti W16 Mistral / The Last of the W16
Open-Air Majesty. Unrivalled Power. A Legend in the Making.
A Farewell to an Extraordinary Era
The Bugatti W16 Mistral is a remarkable closing chapter in one of the most ambitious engineering stories in automotive history. Unveiled in 2022, it celebrates the final road-going appearance of Bugatti’s legendary 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine — the powerplant that helped redefine the limits of modern hypercar performance.
Named after the powerful wind sweeping across southern France, the Mistral combines extraordinary speed with the freedom of open-top motoring. Limited to just 99 examples worldwide, it is an exceptionally exclusive expression of Bugatti’s philosophy: performance without compromise, craftsmanship without equal.
Design & Construction — Sculpted by Air
Inspired by historic Bugatti roadsters, including the Type 57 Roadster Grand Raid, the Mistral combines flowing proportions with dramatic contemporary detailing. Its vertically arranged headlights, three-dimensional horseshoe grille and distinctive X-shaped rear lighting create a striking identity.
Unlike a conventional convertible, the Mistral was engineered as a bespoke open-top hypercar. Its reworked carbon-fibre structure, roof-mounted air intakes and advanced aerodynamic surfaces were developed to preserve structural integrity, engine cooling and high-speed stability.
Inside, exquisite leather, machined aluminium and carefully selected materials create an environment of exceptional craftsmanship. A particularly distinctive detail is the gear selector, featuring an amber insert containing Rembrandt Bugatti’s famous Dancing Elephant sculpture — a subtle tribute to the marque’s historic artistry.
Engine & Performance — The Power of Sixteen Cylinders
At the heart of the Mistral lies the ultimate road-going evolution of Bugatti’s celebrated W16 powertrain. Four turbochargers and advanced cooling systems deliver extraordinary power alongside immense reserves of torque.
Key specifications
- Engine: 7,993 cc quad-turbocharged W16
- Maximum power: 1,600 PS (1,578 bhp)

Exclusivity & Collectable Desirability
The Mistral occupies a unique position in Bugatti history: the final road-going model powered by the iconic W16. Its limited production of 99 cars, bespoke construction and record-setting achievement provide compelling foundations for long-term collector interest.
Every example was allocated before production, underlining the extraordinary demand for this final chapter. Individual specification, craftsmanship, provenance and condition will remain important factors in determining future desirability.

Auction Prices & Investment Perspective
The Mistral’s secondary market is already demonstrating substantial interest. In August 2026, a 2025 example sold through RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction for US$8,310,000, including buyer’s premium. The car had covered just 321 miles at cataloguing and featured approximately US$325,000 in factory options and tailored finishes.
Bugatti’s original launch price was €5 million before taxes. The Monterey result illustrates the potential premium attached to exceptional examples, but it should not be interpreted as a universal valuation for all Mistrals.
For collectors, the Mistral combines three significant attributes: extreme rarity, a historic powertrain milestone and a world-record achievement. Nevertheless, resale prices depend on specification, provenance, market conditions and individual buyer demand. Future appreciation is possible, but not guaranteed.
The Final Roar
The Bugatti W16 Mistral is a celebration of mechanical excess and timeless design. It brings together sixteen cylinders, extraordinary engineering and the exhilaration of open-air motoring in a machine destined to remain a landmark of the modern hypercar era.
