Mercedes GT Black Series
FOR SALE
The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series stands as the most uncompromising, track-focused road car ever produced by Mercedes-AMG. Essentially a race car engineered for public roads, it blends a comprehensively reworked V8 engine with advanced aerodynamics and motorsport-inspired engineering to create one of the most formidable and desirable modern performance cars.
Mercedes GT Black Series Engine Specification
At the core of the GT Black Series is a heavily revised version of AMG’s hand-built 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, internally designated the M178 LS2.
- Power Output: 730 hp
- Torque: 590 lb-ft (800 Nm)
- Firing Order: Features a flat-plane crankshaft instead of AMG’s traditional cross-plane configuration, producing a sharper throttle response and a distinctive high-revving exhaust note.
- Performance: Accelerates from 0–62 mph in just 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 202 mph.
We discreetly source and place vehicles of this calibre for private clients.
Construction and Track Package
Extensive carbon-fibre construction is used throughout the vehicle, including the bonnet, roof, driveshaft, and numerous body panels, helping to minimise weight and enhance rigidity. Many buyers specified the optional AMG Track Package, which added a titanium roll cage, four-point harnesses, and a fire extinguisher, further reinforcing the car’s race-inspired character.
Assembley and Engineering
The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series was produced in extremely limited numbers, with only 1,700 examples manufactured globally. Production spanned a brief 16-month period from October 2020 through to February 2022. Rather than announcing a fixed numerical cap from the outset, Mercedes-AMG instead restricted availability by limiting the car to a tightly controlled production timeframe, further enhancing its exclusivity.
Final assembly of the GT Black Series took place at the Mercedes-Benz facility in Sindelfingen, Germany. However, its highly specialised M178 LS2 flat-plane crank V8 engine was individually hand-built at AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach, following the brand’s renowned “One Man, One Engine” principle, where a single technician is responsible for each engine from start to finish.
Worldwide Allocation
Due to strong demand and the car’s limited production volume, allocations were carefully distributed across major global markets.
- United States: Approximately 400 cars were delivered, making it the largest individual market.
- United Kingdom: An estimated 75–100 right-hand-drive examples were allocated.
- Australia: Just 28 units were delivered, making it one of the rarest markets for the model.
The Exclusive “Project One” Edition
Included within the 1,700-car production total was an even rarer derivative known as the Project One Edition, limited to just 275 units worldwide.
This special version was not publicly available and could only be ordered by customers who had already placed deposits on the multi-million-dollar Mercedes-AMG One hypercar. The edition was introduced partly as a goodwill gesture to compensate buyers for the AMG One’s extensive production delays.
Visually, the Project One Edition featured a distinctive Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One-inspired design, complete with bespoke turquoise detailing, unique graphics, and hand-painted three-pointed star motifs across the rear bodywork. The interior also received exclusive colour accents and trim details that separated it from the standard GT Black Series.
Investment Value
The GT Black Series has also established itself as a highly desirable collector’s car and investment asset. Limited to just 1,700 examples worldwide, it is rarer than many contemporary Ferraris. Originally priced at approximately £335,000 in the UK, demand has remained exceptionally strong, bolstered by its Nürburgring production car lap record pedigree. As a result, values on the secondary market have consistently exceeded original list prices.
Overview
Unlike earlier Black Series models, which retained elements of grand touring comfort, the GT Black Series was designed with circuit performance as its primary objective. Its aggressive aerodynamic package includes an adjustable front splitter and a prominent dual-element rear wing, enabling the car to generate up to 400 kg of downforce at 155 mph. This immense aerodynamic grip delivers exceptional stability and cornering performance at high speeds.
